Free 2nd Thursday West Seattle art walk

The West Seattle art walk is a monthly art event that is held the second Thursday of each month 6pm to 9pm year-round. The art walk is hosted by the local West Seattle merchants who feature a wide range of art and showcase our vibrant artist community.

From Alki to Endolyne, the West Seattle Art Walk is brought to you by West Seattle merchants. Over 60 merchants in the West Seattle Junction, Alki Beach, Admiral District, Morgan Junction, Fauntleroy District and Delridge display art and showcase artists.

Free entrance for first 50 in neon to SAM Remix August 27 at Olympic Sculpture Park

See new installations and celebrate summer at the Olympic Sculpture Park. Experience art, performances, talks, dancing and more at the late-night SAM Remix creative explosion! Illuminate the park after dark by wearing neon; the first 50 people in neon get in free. SAM Remix event August 27, 2010, 8 pm–midnight at Olympic Sculpture Park , 2901 Western Avenue, Seattle, WA 98121. (Regular admission is $15/$12 for SAM members.)

Free/$5 Welcome Party August 22 for Chinese Artisans at Seattle Chinese Garden

Seattle will soon be home to one of the most unique gardens and cultural centers in the county. The 4.6-acre Seattle Chinese Garden will be one of the largest Chinese gardens outside of China, showcasing not only plants, but also stone, architecture and water elements that are customary to Chinese gardens. The Garden will also feature 12 buildings, including an education center and a banquet hall with special event seating for up to 200 people. The Garden is being built in phases. Some site work has been done and next will be construction of the “Knowing the Spring Courtyard”, the second traditional structure in the Garden. Completion of the Courtyard is expected by end of 2010. Components for this courtyard will be fabricated in Chongqing, and assembly performed by Chinese artisans from Chongqing and local Seattle contractors.

Seattle Chinese Garden is hosting an Artisan Welcome Party Sunday, August 22 from 1–4 pm to celebrate the arrival of the Chinese artisans and welcome them to Seattle at a fun, festive, community event! You will get to see Courtyard Progress and the Garden Site and have the opportunity to talk with the Artisans (translators on hand) who are constructing the Garden. The public is invited to this free community event. There is a suggested donation of $5. The festivities include:

  • Lion Dance (1:40 pm)
  • Martial Arts by Tony Au International
  • Chinese Children’s Dances by the Melody Institute
  • Chinese Arts Demonstrations
  • Kite Flying and Family Activities
  • Directions: Drive into the north entrance to South Seattle Community College, 6000 16th Ave. SW (map). The college arboretum is on your left.

    Parking: Continue driving straight ahead past the one-story building on your left (the Chan Education Center). Turn left into the entrance to a small parking lot for the Landscape Horticulture Building (LHO) and the Chan Center. Look for Chinese Garden signs directing you to an LHO classroom. If this parking lot is full, park in the large lot to the south.

    About the Artisans

      Feng Dacheng, lead designer from Chongqing, and Song Weizhong, chief architect and project manager for the Changshu Ancient Style Garden Construction Company, will guide courtyard construction. Local partners are construction firm Krekow Jennings and Jones and Jones Architecture.
      Yangming Chu is the Garden Society’s project director. An expert on Chinese art history and architecture, Chu oversaw the first stage of courtyard construction in 2008, the building of the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden in 1998, and the Ming Courtyard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

    Free Bellevue Arts Museum artsfair, July 23-25, 2010

    Come to the FREE Bellevue Arts Museum (BAM) artsfair, featuring some of the most talented artists of our region as well as from across the nation. From one-of-a-kind ceramics and hand-blown glass to fine jewelry, paintings and photography, you will delve into the world of art and discover the engaging and spirited work of over 300 exceptional artists.Be sure to also take the time to talk to some of the talented artists who participate in the BAM artsfair. Hearing their stories and ideas is one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll have at this event.

    BAM artsfair highlights:

  • Over 300 juried exhibitors. Unique, handmade arts & crafts that are hard to find anywhere else. Media include drawing/pastels, fiber, furniture, glass, jewelry, metal work, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, wearables and wood.

  • Special exhibits.

    4Culture offers a cell phone audio tour featuring public artwork in Seattle’s downtown core with downloadable map and audio.

    4Culture is the cultural services agency for King County, Washington and provides programs, financial support and services in the arts, public art, heritage and historic preservation for all residents and visitors in King County.

    The gallery is located on the Courtyard of the Hyatt and next to Joey’s Restaurant and Kreiss Furniture. There is Free Underground Parking (look for the elevators that say Bellevue Place and come to level 1).

    $3 Wine, hors d'oeuvres, and art discussion by SAM in Studio 1000 at Hotel 1000

    Hotel 1000 and Seattle Art Museum (SAM) “SAM in the Studio” speaker series features a presentation by SAM curators on a current or upcoming exhibition, followed by a discussion with the audience. The speaker series takes place on every other first Wednesday of the month within the intimate setting of STUDIO 1000 at Hotel 1000, where complimentary hors d’oeuvres from Boka Kitchen and Bar are served and wines by the glass are available for purchase for $3 to benefit Seattle Art Museum. Each event in the series will begin with a reception starting at 5:00 pm and then the curator will start at 5:30 p.m.

    Wednesday, June 9, 2010. Join Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Marisa C. Sánchez, as she discusses “Love, Fear, Pleasure, Lust, Pain, Glamour, Death – Andy Warhol Media Works.” Offering a focused and provocative experience of Warhol’s photography and film portraits, this exhibition includes Polaroids, photobooth strips and sewn photographs, presented alongside Warhol’s Screen Tests. The exhibition includes works that compel the public to consider the artist’s fascination with all things ephemeral, from beauty and youth to celebrity status including photographs and videos from 1960-1980 -two decades in which the artist’s work had tremendous impact on contemporary art production and culture. The exhibition will be opened at SAM on Thursday, May 13 – Monday, September 6, 2010.

    Free artwalk 3rd Thursday on Upper Queen Anne Art Walk, May-October

    The Upper Queen Anne Artwalk occurs every 3rd Thursday, May-October starting at 6pm. Location of the art walk is Howe St & Queen Anne Ave N., Seattle, WA 98109.

    Come join the local artists showcasing their work at various businesses around upper Queen Anne. Look for balloons in front of the participating business locations and come meet the artists!

    Always free Frye Museum

    Located on Seattle’s First Hill, the Frye Art Museum is a 501(c)(3) private operating foundation, organized as a charitable non-profit corporation in Washington State. The Frye first opened its doors in 1952 as the legacy of Charles and Emma Frye, prominent early-twentieth century Seattle business leaders and art collectors. Since that time, works from the Frye Founding Collection of late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century European paintings have continuously been on view. The Museum also hosts notable exhibitions of works by internationally renowned and emerging artists, as well as extensive public programs.

    Visiting the Frye Museum is always free. Hours:

    The Frye is closed on Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.
    Free parking is available in the parking lot across the street from the entrance on Terry Avenue.
    Public tours of Frye exhibitions, led by trained gallery guides are available Wed–Sun at 1 pm.

    Wednesday, May 19, 2010. Join the Jon and Mary Shirley Curator of Modern & Contemporary Art, Michael Darling, as he discusses “Kurt.” Grunge music is arguably Seattle’s greatest cultural export of the past 20 years, and Kurt Cobain was that movement’s central figure. International in scope, the works on view in this exhibition range from straightforward portraiture to pieces that show a more subtle assimilation of Cobain’s ethos and idealism in a broad range of media. Kurt includes works from artists such as Rodney Graham, Douglas Gordon and Elizabeth Peyton. The exhibition will be opened at SAM on Thursday, May 13 – Monday, September 6, 2010.
