Make a day of it at the Pike Place Market Fruit Festival, July 25, 2010. The fun starts at 10:00 a.m. Get there early to enjoy activities–be sure to catch the “Iron Chef” competition at NOON, and then break for lunch. In the afternoon, shop for the season’s best locally grown fruits and veggies before you head home. There will also be plenty of live entertainment. Look for tents lining the west side of Pike Place Market between Pike and Pine Streets.
The highlights of the day is sure to be the friendly “Iron Chef”-style competition between Josh Green of the Virginia Inn and Chef Ron Anderson of Etta’s Seafood who will vie for the title of “Master of the Market.” Each chef will be presented with two secret ingredients at noon. They will then have 20 minutes and $25 to shop from farmers in a mad-dash for ingredients. After the shopping spree they’ll return to the cooking tent to create, in 45 minutes, a dish of their choice. Upon presentation of each creation, judges will merit each based on originality, taste and presentation.

*Community Supported Agriculture
If you are interested in supporting local agriculture and getting easy access to the freshest produce the Puget Sound region has to offer, join a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program!
CSAs are a very simple agreement between you and a local farmer. You pay an upfront “subscription fee” directly to the farmer and each week during the growing season, the farmer packs a “farmers-market-in-a-box” just for you (usually mid-June to late-October). The money goes directly to the farmer and the food goes directly to you. Program lengths range from 14-25 weeks at $10-40 per week, depending on the size of the box.
Each farm’s CSA program is slightly different. Most Puget Sound CSA programs begin in June–sign up soon to get your first choice of program. For information on finding a program that works for you, go to the King County CSA information page.
