Lowe’s offers free Build & Grow workshops where kids (ages 3 & up) can come and learn to build a wooden project. Each participant also receives a free apron, goggles, and a project themed patch, with a certification of merit upon completion of their project. Here are the projects the kids can tackle over the next couple of weeks:

Any Elementary School, Middle School or High School participating in the National School Lunch Program, located within 50 miles of a Whole Foods Market store is eligible to apply for a Grant Award to receive a portable 5-well Cambro salad bar and training tools for school personnel. All applications must be submitted electronically and received no later than midnight, November 1, 2010. A school representative must apply and secure the signature of their districts superintendent, school principal and school nutrition director. This application can be found at: www.saladbarproject.org Grant applications will be accepted between September 1, 2010 and November 1, 2010. Successful applicants will be announced by January 15, 2011.
Whole Foods Market is partnering with Chef Ann Cooper, the “Renegade Lunch Lady”, on The Salad Bar Project to raise awareness about the need to improve school lunch both nutritionally and by incorporating fresh, real food. With the assistance of Chef Cooper’s nonprofit group, Food Family Farming Foundation, grants will be awarded to schools based on their grant application as well as their school’s commitment to the ongoing support and sustainability of the Salad Bar.
FREE beginning swim lessons for youth, ages 6 and older at all nine beaches operated by Seattle Parks & Recreation. Registration begins on first day of
operation during regular beach hours and continues until all sessions fill. Register in person at the beach. Classes are held M-F 12:15-12:45am

Space is limited so be sure to register early!
Wading pools operated by Seattle Parks are open on sunny days when the temperature is forecast to be 70 degrees or above. On most days pools are filled half full, which is a 50% water savings…..but on the busiest days they will be filled to the top!

The annual Alki Arts Fair raises money for scholarships for art class scholarships offered through the Alki Community Center and Alki Bathhouse. More than 70 artists will be selling their work.
Here’s a summary of the available fun:
kids can enjoy the arts & crafts booth and bouncy toy
food vendors will include barbecue, hot dogs, kettle corn, shave ice, cotton candy
14 bands will play live music
Kids up to age 12 can read any eight (8) books of their choosing and use the Barnes & Noble Passport to Summer Reading to document the places visited in each book. Kids bring their completed Passport to any B&N store between May 25 and September 7, 2010 and get a coupon for a FREE BOOK, to be chosen from a list of paperback titles.
Kids up to age 12 can read any ten (10) books of their choosing in the Borderds Double Dog Dare summer reading program. Download the form, fill it out, and bring it in to any Borders or Waldenbooks store by August 26, 2010 and get a coupon for a FREE BOOK.
Family Adventure Packs are backpacks supplied with field guides, scavenger hunts, magnifying lenses and activity ideas for children in grades K-6. The Family Pass starts from $24.95 and includes 2 GAMES PER PERSON PER DAY. The Family Pass covers up to 4 adult family members. You may have 1, 2, 3, or 4 adults on the family pass.
