Free weekend craft workshops for kids at Lowe’s

Lowe’s offers free Build & Grow workshops where kids (ages 3 & up) can come and learn to build a wooden project. Each participant also receives a free apron, goggles, and a project themed patch, with a certification of merit upon completion of their project. Here are the projects the kids can tackle over the next couple of weeks:

  • Saturday, September 11: Pet Leash Hanger
  • Saturday, September 25: Fire Truck
  • If these projects aren’t a good fit for your brood, check back in a few weeks. Lowe’s typically offers a few free Build & Grow workshops each month!

    Free Alki Art Fair July 24-25, 2010

    The annual Alki Arts Fair raises money for scholarships for art class scholarships offered through the Alki Community Center and Alki Bathhouse. More than 70 artists will be selling their work.

    Here’s a summary of the available fun:

  • kids can enjoy the arts & crafts booth and bouncy toy
  • food vendors will include barbecue, hot dogs, kettle corn, shave ice, cotton candy
  • 14 bands will play live music
  • Ventures Grand Opening Party July 24 in Pioneer Square

    Join us for Ventures Grand Opening Day Party! Ventures officially opened for business on June 1st, and the buzz is beginning to build! If you haven’t yet heard about Ventures, it’s Washington CASH’s gorgeous new retail store that gives local entrepreneurs a chance to directly sell their products and services in the marketplace. The store features the works of over 40 Washington CASH clients, ranging from one-of-a-kind jewelry to Native American wood carvings.

    Celebrate with us at our day-long Grand Opening event on Saturday, July 24th from 11 am – 5 pm. Bring your family and friends, and enjoy the face painting, coffee tastings, and other exciting activities planned for Grand Opening Day!

    New Flea Market open Saturdays in summer in Pioneer Square

    Starting Saturday, July 17th, Pioneer Square will feature The Seattle Square, a new outdoor market. Located in Occidental Park and open from 11am – 5pm every Saturday through the end of Septemberm the market will feature a wide range of vintage and craft vendor, selling everything from locally designed clothing, to handmade housewares and accessories, to mid-century furniture. A rotating selection of Seattle’s mobile food vendors will be serving up a variety of fantastic eats set to a live soundtrack spun by a rotating cast of local DJ’s. Come take a stroll through Seattle’s newest outdoor market in its oldest neighborhood!

    THE SEATTLE SQUARE is a pilot community activation initiative in South Downtown’s Occidental Square. Kicking off on July 17th, this outdoor market will bring Seattlites together to activate the region’s oldest neighborhood while supporting local entrepreneurs as well as the business community in South Downtown. The Seattle Square is a community partnership with support from the City of Seattle’s Department of Planning and Development, Parks Department, Tether Design Gallery, Banyan Branch, The Downtown Seattle Association, CleanScapes, and the Pioneer Square Community Association. The Square aims to bring Seattlites together to activate the region’s oldest neighborhood while supporting local entrepreneurs as well as the attendant business community.

    Free Bellevue Arts Museum artsfair, July 23-25, 2010

    Come to the FREE Bellevue Arts Museum (BAM) artsfair, featuring some of the most talented artists of our region as well as from across the nation. From one-of-a-kind ceramics and hand-blown glass to fine jewelry, paintings and photography, you will delve into the world of art and discover the engaging and spirited work of over 300 exceptional artists.Be sure to also take the time to talk to some of the talented artists who participate in the BAM artsfair. Hearing their stories and ideas is one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll have at this event.

    BAM artsfair highlights:

  • Over 300 juried exhibitors. Unique, handmade arts & crafts that are hard to find anywhere else. Media include drawing/pastels, fiber, furniture, glass, jewelry, metal work, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, wearables and wood.
  • Fun for kids. Hands-on art activities for children big and small.
  • Special exhibits.
  • Delicious concessions. Food from non-profit partners such as Bellevue Rotary, Eastside Shrine Club and the Greater Bellevue Lions Club.

    Spring Best of the Northwest Art Show, March 27-28, 2010 in Sand Point

    Spring Best of the Northwest juried art show March 27-28, 2010 from 10:00 AM − 6:00 PM at Warren G Magnuson Park, 7400 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle, WA 98115.

    Best of the Northwest is presented by Northwest Art Alliance, a network of artists, art supporters, art organizations and art collectors.

    $2 crafts fun at Bellevue Art Museum on Saturdays

    Get Crafty Saturdays! Come to Bellevue Art Museum (BAM) on most Saturdays from 1 – 3 pm for these fun craft events for kids and family. For just $2 materials fee (FREE with admission to BA), you get to explore a craft and have fun doing it! Sponsored by Bank of America.

    Here are some of the upcoming craft projects:

  • February 13, 20, and 27: Enamels with Sand. Enamel is made from powdered glass that is arranged on a piece and fired so it melts together. Explore the process by using colored sand to fill in sections of your own drawing just as an enamellist would.
  • March 6 and 13. Shoe design. We provide the base, you create the shoe! Start with a pre-made shoe base from cardboard and foam, then add all the decorations and shapes you want to create your very own artistic shoe. Visit Beth Levine: First Lady of Shoes and see the artist’s own paper shoe for inspiration.
  • March 20 and 27. Basic Weaving. Start with a handheld miniature loom and learn the basic process of warp and weft to create your own miniature tapestry. Look around the Museum Forum at the art of Lia Cook and see how advanced weaving can become.
  • April 3 and 10. Shoe Art. Take an old shoe and give it a new life by turning it into something artistic and wonderful. BAM will provide a variety of old shoes to choose from or you can bring one of your own. Use paint, glue, fabric and more to create your own design.
  • April 17 and 24. Homemade Window Stickers. Use a special paint on a clear plastic surface to create whatever design you wish. Take the artwork home and let it dry. Then peel off your image for your very own self-stick window decoration.

    Free activies in Club Bamboo at Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS)

    Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS) is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization offering a broad array of human services and behavioral health programs to Asian Pacific Americans in King County. ACRS is the largest multiservice organization serving all the different Asian Pacific American communities – immigrants, refugees and American born – in the Pacific Northwest.

    Club Bamboo’s Weekly Activities are held in ACRS’ Activity Center and are free of charge unless otherwise stated. Activities include table tennis, tai chi, computer labs, calligraphy, and more.
