Help NASA select wakeup songs for the final missions of the Space Shuttle Program

The wakeup song has been a part of the space program since the days of the Apollo missions. The National Aeronautics and Space Program (NASA) has launched NASA’s Space Rock, a contest to help select the two wakeup songs to be played during the 133rd (and final) flight (STS-133) of the Space Shuttle Program! The two songs with the most votes will be played during the STS-133 mission. There are two ways to participate.

Vote on NASA’s Top 40 Previous WakeupSongs. Listen to and vote on your favorite song from a list of 40 previously played wakeup songs.
Write a Song and Submit Your Own Original Work. Submit your original song by January 10, 2011. Entries will be screened by our NASA panel. The top entries will then be posted on their website for a public vote starting on February 8, 2011.

I’ve narrowed my choices to these songs:
Free Fallin
Good Day Sunshine
Here Comes The Sun
Learning to Fly
Magic Carpet Ride
Over the Rainbow
Rocket Man
Roll With It
Start Me Up
What a Wonderful World

URGENT Nationwide Egg Recall August 19, 2010 includes Washington State

The FDA has issues an URGENT Nationwide Egg Recall. Wright County Egg in Iowa has expanded its recall to cover all 5 of its farms and 380 million eggs. The recall affects eggs shipped since May 16, 2010 and sent to food wholesalers, distribution centers and foodservice companies in California, Illinois, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Arizona, Texas, Georgia, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Iowa. The FDA is initiating effectiveness checks of the recall, conducting checks at retail stores, wholesalers and distributors to make sure the recalled shell eggs are being removed from the market.

What do Consumers Need to Do?

  • Don’t eat recalled eggs.
  • Consumers who have recalled eggs should discard them or return them to their retailer for a refund.
  • Individuals who think they might have become ill from eating recalled eggs should consult their health care providers.
  • How to determine whether you might have affected eggs

  • Shell eggs under the August 13, 2010 recall are packaged under the brand names: Lucerne (Safeway brand), Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps. Shell eggs are packed in 6-egg cartons, 12-egg cartons, 18-egg cartons, and loose eggs with Julian dates ranging from 136 to 225 and plant numbers 1026, 1413 and 1946.
  • Recalled shell eggs affected by the expanded recall are packaged under the brand names: Albertsons, Farm Fresh, James Farms, Glenview, Mountain Dairy, Ralphs, Boomsma, Lund, Kemps and Pacific Coast. Eggs are packed in varying sizes of cartons (6-egg, 12-egg, and18-egg cartons, and loose eggs for institutional use and repackaging) with Julian dates ranging from 136 to 229 and plant numbers 1720 and 1942.
  • Dates and codes can be found stamped on the end of the egg carton or printed on the case label. The plant number begins with the letter P and then the number. The Julian date follows the plant number, for example: P-1720 223. More information about how to identify affected eggs is available at the Egg Safety Center.

If consumers are unsure about the source of their eggs, they are urged not to eat them and to discard them immediately.

Happy Birthday: Link light rail celebrates one year anniversary

Today, Sound Transit marks the first birthday of Central Link light rail, which during its inaugural year of operations attracted an estimated six million riders, adding up to major environmental savings and better quality of life. Had those six million riders driven cars instead of climbing aboard Link, Sound Transit estimates they would have consumed 93,000 barrels of oil to make 1.8 million gallons of gasoline.

Quick facts about Link’s 1st year of service:

  • Total light rail train miles travelled: 1.2 million
  • Estimated ridership for the first year: 6 million
  • Average rider trip length: 7.1 miles
  • Passenger miles travelled: 43 million
  • Light rail trains run every 7.5 minutes during peak hours and every 10 or 15 minutes at other hours of the day, offering a fast and convenient way to move around. Light rail stations offer easy connections to buses that serve other destinations throughout the region. Commuters can secure bicycles at Link stations or bring them onboard the trains.

“This is a great achievement for a region that has embraced light rail after years of waiting,” said Sound Transit Board Chair and Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon. “Thanks to light rail, the people of this region have saved time, money and precious natural resources. We’ll only see those savings grow as we expand the system to the north, east and south.”

UHC is one of 25 Puget Sound area sites selected to participate in a public-led initiative sponsored by American Express, in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP). American Express has given $1.1 million dollars to the NTHP for Seattle-Puget Sound Partners in Preservation Initiative grants for projects that preserve and enhance historic places reflecting the Puget Sound region’s diverse heritage. The public gets to help decide which projects receive these funds.

The public online voting competition runs from April 15 – May 12. The organization with the most public votes is guaranteed to receive a grant, so your votes really do count!

    About University Heights Center

The University Heights Center is a non-profit 501c-3 community organization founded in 1989 by University District residents. Residing in one of the oldest (former) elementary school buildings in Washington State, UHC is a vital community center that supports an array of tenants with diverse programs, classes, and activities, and also serves as a venue for many community activities.

The UHC is asking for your help to restore 240 of the windows in the 1908 wooden building. Many windows are warped, drafty, and in need of significant repair to keep community programs alive at the UHC. UHC needs 1,785 votes PER DAY to receive up to $125,000 for restoring the 240 windows and asks everyone to pull together as a community to preserve this historic landmark.
