Free Annual Tree Lighting Celebration at Westlake Center in Seattle

The Annual Tree Lighting Celebration begins at 4:45 pm on November 25, 2011 at Westlake Center Plaza, 400 Pine Street, Seattle, WA 98101 (Google map). Hosted by Joyce Taylor and Mark Wright from KING 5, there will of course be a special guest appearance from Santa Claus. The celebration includes live music as Seattle gets lit up for the holidays!

Free Winterfest at Seattle Center runs through November-December holidays

Seattle Center sets the scene for five weeks of FREE, affordable, and fun-filled family activities, soulful festivities, and so much more. Take a break from the seasonal frenzy and visit Seattle Center, a 90-second ride away from downtown Seattle aboard the Seattle Center Monorail at Westlake Center Mall (Fifth Avenue and Pine Street, Google map). Step off the monorail and discover an enchanting miniature Winter Train and Village, and trees dressed in sparkling lights. Center House will be decked out in good cheer as it prepares for The Next Fifty; honoring the 50th anniversary of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair. Enjoy the Winterfest Ice Rink, Saturday afternoon ice sculpting and performances by more than 100 student groups. Then return to watch the fireworks at a New Year’s Eve Celebration featuring live music from The Rhythm Nation. Seattle Center Winterfest is part of Holidays in the City, and is sponsored by the City of Seattle, Seattle Center Foundation and KOMO 4 TV.

Free Hmong Lunar New Year Festival at Seattle Center Fisher Pavilion November 5, 2011

The Lunar New Year is a time to welcome the prosperity of the coming year and the passing of the previous year. Gain insights into the customary courtship ritual of ball tossing and participate in flower cloth sewing sessions. The Celebration marks the end of the harvest season and the coming of the New Year when the community gathers and friends share stories. It showcases local Hmong dancers, musicians and artists in ways that illuminate and preserve the unique Southeast Asian highland culture. Presented by the Hmong Association of Washington.

Seattle Center Festál, a series of 22 world festivals presented at Seattle Center on weekends throughout 2010, highlights the distinct cultures and common threads of ethnic communities in our region through traditional and contemporary art, music, foods, youth activities, workshops and more. This collection of cultural events is produced with the generous support of Wells Fargo, Verizon Wireless, KUOW 94.9 Public Radio and Western Washington Toyota Dealers. Free performance of Michael Jackson’s Thriller Saturday, Oct 29 in Seattle and Redmond

Thrill The World is an annual worldwide simultaneous dance of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” for world records and charity. Thrill the World events are held each year at Redmond Town Center and Seattle’s Occidental Park in Pioneer Square. Each event has the option to raise money for a local charity of their choice. All official Thrill the World events are included in the numbers for setting and breaking World Records.

Want to spend a little time on the viaduct before it’s demolished? Of course you do. Join the commemorative walk on Seattle’s Alaskan Way Viaduct Saturday, October 22, 2011. Get a firsthand perspective from the top deck of the viaduct near the stadiums. Watch as crews demolish large sections of the structure that helped shape Seattle’s waterfront. Enjoy great views of the cityand take home a commemorative piece of the viaduct.

  • Elected officials help celebrate this major milestone at 1 p.m.
  • No RSVPs are required, but some restrictions apply. Please wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for late October weather. No pets or bicycles are allowed on the structure. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The event will be ADA accessible.

Parking is available just south of Railroad Way South (Google map), in the fenced construction site and on adjacent city streets and in nearby pay lots.

Win 30 minutes on the Alaskan Way Viaduct in Seattle, enter WSDOT Contest by October 16, 2011

What would you do if you had the Alaskan Way Viaduct all to yourself for 30 minutes, free of cars and people? Maybe celebrate a birthday, propose to your significant other or stage a flash mob? That’s what the Washington State Department of Transportation wants to know.

  • WSDOT is sponsoring the One Last Shot Public Contest where one lucky person and 24 of their friends will win exclusive access to the Viaduct’s downtown section for 30 minutes on Oct. 22. The southern mile of the Viaduct closes for nine days for demolition starting Oct. 21.

To enter, answer the question “What would I do with 30 minutes on the Alaskan Way Viaduct?” in 100 words or less and send it to viaduct@wsdot.wa.gov by Sunday, Oct. 16. The winner will be escorted to a private section of the viaduct at a predetermined time to follow through with their plan. Check the WSDOT website for contest details, rules and restrictions.

Free bazaar in Seattle Oct 8-9, Taste of Old Russia features exotic foods, authentic beers and vodka, dancing

Come to the Taste of Old Russia bazaar on Saturday-Sunday, October 8-9, 2011 Noon to 5:00pm. Admission is free. Sample exotic foods from Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistant. Taste authentic beers, wines and vodka’s. Buy take-home meals. The bazaar takes place at St. Nicholas Cathedral in Seattle.   • Sunday, October 9 at 12:00pm the Folk Dance Ensemble “Ivan-da-Mar’ya” will perform. Since 2008, Ivan-da-Mar’ya has performed at many events throughout the Seattle area. Both children and adults actively participate in the ensemble, making the performances interesting for all age groups.
