On Monday, May 18th, KEXP will host a special discussion with Jon Savage, author of the book “This Searing Light The Sun and Everything Else: Joy Division: An Oral History”. Jon Savage’s oral history of Joy Division is the last word on the band that ended with the suicide of Ian Curtis in Macclesfield on 18 May, 1980. The book is available at your favorite independent bookseller or on Amazon.
About the band. Over the course of two albums and some legendary gigs, Joy Division became the most successful and exciting underground band of their generation. Then, on the brink of a tour to America, Ian Curtis took his own life. The book weaves together interviews conducted by the author, but never used in the making of the 2007 film Joy Division, which told the story of the band in their own words, as well as those of their peers, collaborators, and contemporaries.
About the book. In his book “This Searing Light The Sun and Everything Else: Joy Division: An Oral History”, Jon Savage has assembled three decades’ worth of interviews with the principal players in the Joy Division story to create an intimate, candid and definitive account of the band. It is the story of how a group of young men can galvanise a generation of fans, artists and musicians with four chords and three-and-a-half minutes of music. And it is the story of how illness and inner demons can rob the world of a shamanic lead singer and visionary lyricist.
