Before Oprah – before Arsenio – there was Mr. SOUL! Ellis Haizlip made television broadcast history with “SOUL!”, described as America’s first “Black Tonight Show.” He was hip. He was smart. He was innovative, political, and gay. In his personal fight for social equality, Ellis ensured the revolution would be televised. The Revolution was “SOUL!”—an amazing weekly television show. Right on the heels of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, this fearless black pioneer reignited a Harlem Renaissance for a new era. The groundbreaking show aired on public television from 1968 – 1973, where he ushered giants and rising stars of Black American culture onto the national television stage. This event is hosted by the Meaningful Movies Project, ITVS and Indie Lens. The Port Townsend Meaningful Movies Group has organized this event. More info: https://www.mrsoulmovie.com/.
