The Dr. James W. Washington, Jr. & Mrs. Janie Rogella Washington Foundation was established in 1997 by the couple to “preserve the art, writing, and lifetime works of Dr. Washington along with their home and gardens. The eminent African American sculptor and painter James Washington Jr. was a leading member of the Northwest School who came to the Puget Sound region in 1944 to work in the Bremerton Naval Yard as a journeyman electrician. He found exhibition space at Frederick & Nelson’s Little Gallery and through that venue met Mark Tobey (1890-1976) and other Northwest artists. His wife, Janie was a Seattle nurse who shared and inspired the spirituality that shaped the art of her husband. Over the years, the Washington Foundation has maintained and upgraded the house, studio, and gardens and presented activities and programs for the community. This in-person tour of the Washingtons’ home includes a look at the grounds and studio by board President Reverend Dr. LaVerne Hall. Please note that the property is not ADA accessible.
