The Nightshade Family (Solanaceae) includes tomatoes, potatoes, tomatillos, and peppers. These warm season crops can be a challenge to grow in Western Washington, but by selecting the right cultivars, taking a few special measures, and benefiting from our increasingly hot summers, gardeners are becoming more successful. This vegetable gardening class will cover variety selection, what “open pollinated” means, cultural requirements, container growing, fertilizer needs, seed saving and the consequences of saving seed from hybrid varieties, major diseases and pests, as well as pest management techniques.
