In October 2014, 92Y’s Unterberg Poetry Center celebrated Dylan Thomas’s centenary by turning Kaufmann Concert Hall into a studio for a performance of “Under Milk Wood”, broadcast live on BBC Radio. The Poetry Center presented the premiere of this “play for voices,” with Thomas himself leading the cast, on May 14, 1953 (listen here). Starting in 2015, May 14 came to be known as Dylan Day, an annual celebration of the poet’s life and work.
To mark Dylan Day 2020, 92Y now releases never-before-seen footage of the 2014 performance for a limited time only. Michael Sheen, who directed the 2014 performance and led a cast of all Welsh actors (Kate Burton, Karl Johnson, Mark Lewis Jones, Francine Morgan and Matthew Aubrey), has said it was “a real honor and an absolute thrill to be able to perform “Under Milk Wood” on the stage [where] it first found its voice.”
The broadcast played live on BBC Radio Wales, but the footage has never before been available to the public. It is available online from May 14 – June 12, 2020. Tickets are $10. More info: https://www.92y.org/event/umw.aspx
