Family Fun Day Seattle’s largest maritime industry celebration. Want to pilot a tugboat or a ferry boat? Try your hand at welding? Fire an emergency flare? Or be in a Survival Suit Race?
Everything is free; except food trucks providing refreshments.
Highlights include a tour of Seattle’s inland waterway–the ship canal, plus working boat tours, boat building for the kiddos, demonstrations and displays, and hands-on practice of several maritime skills.
Here are just some of the free things to see and do:
Demonstrations and displays feature commercial diving operations, fishing net repair, tsunami research, nautical charting, seven steps of survival at sea, how to use fire extinguishers, salmon and marine mammals of Puget Sound, marine debris and oil-spill cleanups, and awesome maritime gear.
Pilot a workboat at the full mission bridge simulator and engine room.
Practice with the U.S. Coast Guard on flooding scenarios you can encounter on fishing boats.
Abandon Ship! Learn the 7 steps of survival at sea.
Review nautical charts with National Ocean Service (NOAA) and Office of Coast Survey.
Learn about the Ballard Locks, the busiest locks in the United States managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
See the life boat display from Compass Courses Maritime Training in Edmonds, who offers training for mariners.
Check out the Oil Removal Demonstration by Global Diving and Salvage, the largest diving contractor on the West Coast.
View the underwater images from a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV). ROVs are unoccupied, highly maneuverable, and operated by a crew aboard a vessel.
