About Our Big Neighborhood
Northwest Folklife and Seattle Center are proud to present Our Big Neighborhood. This program replaced the 30-year-old Whirligig family festival at Seattle Center.
Inspired by the Northwest Folklife Children’s Festival, these community events build on a long history of cultural programming. Each festival combines live music, storytelling, dance, and other art forms.
The events are designed to spark curiosity, appreciation, and understanding for the multi-cultural differences that make the Seattle area so vibrant.

2020 “Our Big Neighborhood” programs
February 15-21, 2020. Movin’ Around the World: Winter. Our Big Neighborhood provides a unique space for artists, family, and friends to celebrate our diverse traditions. Experience the cultures of our Pacific Northwest neighbors at Movin’ Around the World: Winter! Held during Seattle Public Schools’ mid-winter break, this weeklong celebration geared for kids 10 and under highlights a different theme each day to encourage learning through song, dance, and art.
VIRTUAL EVENT. April 13-17, 2020. Movin’ Around the World: Spring. During these times of uncertainty, Northwest Folklife and Seattle Center remain committed to uplifting our community and celebrating the arts and culture of our region while we navigate a world that requires us to remain physically apart. That’s why Movin’ Around the World is going digital! Families are invited to participate in dances, music, and culture from around the world from some of the same artists they would see at Northwest Folklife events, right in your own home! Each day will focus on a new topic as local artists share their arts and culture with us through videos. New videos and activities will be available daily at 11am.
1, 8, & 15, 2020. Global Playground. Get outside and celebrate this summer at Global Playground, where cultural connectivity meets outdoor fun! Located at Artists at Play, the city’s most unique gathering space, local bands, DJs, and dancers will keep the party going with the sights and sounds of our young creative community. Geared for youth 13 and under, this event takes place on the first three Saturdays of August.
October 24-25, 2020. Seattle Children’s Festival. Seattle Children’s Festival is a weekend celebration where families learn directly from our neighbors who pass on the songs, dances, and stories of their cultures. The event passport acts as a guide to travel the world through 2 main stages, 3 interactive workshop spaces, 2 Discovery Zones full of activities, and a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) Lab. Designed for kids 12 and under, there’s plenty to experience, ranging from hip-hop and folklórico dance to robots.
November 27, 2020. Our Big Neighborhood at Winterfest. Ring in the holiday season at Our Big Neighborhood at Winterfest! Curated by Northwest Folklife as a part of Seattle Center Winterfest, the day features special performances that highlight local artists.
