Much of the merriment is free (music, watching contests, festival, parade), some activities require purchase (food, carnival, entering contests, tours). The day commemorates Norway’s Constitution Day, May 17 (in Norwegian, “Syttende mai”), when Norway’s parliament adopted their constitution, modeled on the constitution of the U.S. Norway was the third nation in the world to adopt a constitution and is today the only country aside form the U.S. to still use its original constitution.
