Target is reintroducing its popular Target Circle loyalty program on April 7. The new program has three membership levels — Target Circle, Target Circle Card and Target Circle 360. The first two are FREE and the third has an annual membership fee of $99. (However, the second level requires signing up for a Target store credit card.) From April 7 to May 18, Target Credit Card holders can join Target Circle 360 for $49 for the first year (regularly $99). Is a store credit card a good deal for you?
Maybe. An additional credit card for a specific store is a good idea if:
- your budget and spending habits are under control.
- you already have good credit (score 700 or above). If not, your credit score may be reduced by opening a new credit account.
- you pay off your credit card bill(s) in full every month—this is a must. Otherwise, you pay the store credit card interest fees on unpaid balances, which are typically 5% higher than other credit cards. So, you save nothing.
- you already shop at that store frequently and can take advantage of the additional deals and discounts offered by the card. However, if you are considering a change in shopping habits just to get this deal, examine your needs and budget carefully. If the store prices are higher than where you currently shop, you may end up spending more and save nothing.
